Self-esteem is one of the foundation stones in the psychological building. It is thought much of in such domain as individual development, the school education, the solution of social problem, the corporation associate development and so on. Depression is closely correlated with self-esteem. This paper aims at revealing the characteristic of self-esteem in the depressed students by studying the variation of implicit and explicit self-esteem under different situations, discussing the emergence mechanism of depressive mood and its characteristic and providing some references for the school psychologically healthy education work.This article is divided into three parts: the summary, the experiment study and the conclusion. Questionnaire and the laboratory experiments is adopted to collect data. Study One is to establish and confirm the dual structural model of self-esteem; Study Two is to analyze and compare the depressed and the normal people's structure of self-esteem; Study Three is the experiment study and 2x3 mixed design between subjects is used. Results: (1) the implicit self-esteem and the explicit self-esteem are mutually independent and they are two different ingredients of self-esteem. (2) the depressed students have the same implicit self-esteem as normal students, but their explicit self-esteem is remarkably lower than the latter. (3) the explicit self-esteem is lower than the implicit self-esteem in depressed persons, while is higher in the normal persons, namely, their self-esteem structure exists significant difference. (4)success or failure operation has little influence on the implicit and the explicit self-esteem of individual. (5) one success or failure experience cannot change the self-esteem level of individual, but can enhance his mood, motivation and diligence.
