The Great exhibition of the poems on the two newspapers in 1986 is a reflection of China's contemporary society, an outcome of Chinese modern poetry development, and a strange variation of the Western Postmodernism movement. It is a remarkable wonder in the history of Chinese literature regarding its scale, momentum, influence and social layers involved through this Exhibition, the fixed poetic order was broken; the poetic trend turned from unified to multiple; a brand-new layout of Chinese poetic circles of 20th century was created.Intending to lay this exhibition upon the development history of the whole modernism poetry, this dissertation researches the psychological progress, spiritual features and aesthetic expectation of the third generation poets and analyses systematically the motivations, textual characteristics, causes of the 3rd generation poetic recession and contribution and deficiencies of the 3rd generation poems, taking the difference between these poems and the traditional poems as the point of departure. Many original ideas are raised from the aspects of narration, language and rhetoric in the 3rd generation poems. Poetry becomes purer and more poetical. Concerning poetic narration, the 3rdgeneration poems shift from speaking for the outcasts. The education that the 3rd generation poets received and the instability of their values cause a split in their personalities which leads to a narration tension and separation in poetry. Thus an odd phenomenon occurs: there are two distinct voices in these poems. On the layer of language, the 3rd generation poets introduce colloquial language into the creation of pure poems, widening the poetic subjects, while solving the problem of poetry popularization. But they pat undue emphasis on the importance of colloquial language, which results in an inundation of colloquial poems. And this is criticized as "Intellectual Writing". So appears the controversy about "Folk Writing" and "Intellectual Writing".As for rhetoric, a number of creative assumptions is presented by the 3rd generation poets with an attempt to implement these assumptions in real creative activities. However, certain defects in the theories themselves bring in great disparity between theory and practice. While abolishing one Utopia, the 3rd generation poets strive to establish another kind of Utopia. But the problems existing inthemselves--the serious contradictions between poetic ideal, poeticcreation and real life make all the efforts futile and lead to the decline of the 3rd generation poems.
