| Language translation plays an utmost role social intercourse and informationexchange during the current times of rapid growth in economy, culture, science andtechnology. With the continuous enhancement of the trend to the world economicglobalization and implementation of reform and opening-up policy, communicationand exchange in the areas of politics, economy, technology and education havebrought about rapid development and higher demand for translation of new terms. Inthe early translation works, we seldom find Source Language(SL) words directly usedwith Chinese language. Instead, transliteration was employed to deal with thoseloanwords, which were difficult to translate. Today, a great deal of SL words such as"CPU", "DVD", "WTO", "BBC" are appearing in mass media in terms of technology,politics, education, etc. The fact that those loanwords are directly used in Chineselanguage have posed great challenge for translators and therefore provided a newresearch topic for translation researchers. However, there is no adequateacknowledgement to and definite translation term for such phenomenon. Mr. QiuMaoru attempts to define such phenomenon as "zero translation" in his article" Translatability and Zero Translation". Besides, the word "Borrowing" is sometimesemployed to refer to such translation phenomenon. The author agrees that the term"zero translation" defined by Qiu Maoru is more suitable. However, it is stillnecessary to have a further study and analysis of those zero-translated words. Sincewords that have entered Chinese language are mainly English words. In thisdissertation, the author just confines the study of zero-translation to the translationfrom English to Chinese. Meanwhile, the author attempts to award a justifiableposition to such translation phenomenon in such a certain historical period. Therefore,this dissertation will delimit the term "zero translation" and analyze its features. Afurther analysis and research including causes for the emergence of zero translation,and the translational theories accounting for zero translation will be conducted. Theobjective of this dissertation is to heighten public awareness of those zero-translatedwords. Chapter One is introduction to the study background and the objectives of thestudy of zero translation. Chapter Two involves the preliminary understanding of zero translation. In thischapter, the author will delimit the term of zero translation first, for there is noadequate explanation or definition for such kind of translated words so far, and willpresent reasons for the choice of the newly coined "zero translation". The paperstudies "zero translation" by introducing a continuum in order to form a holisticviewpoint. The analysis of zero translation proves that zero translation is one oftranslation procedures and zero translation possesses its own features. The causes forthat have many. The emergence of zero translation is not a contingent phenomenonbut an inevitable one. Chapter Three is mainly concerned with the comparative study between zerotranslation and transliteration. Zero translation and transliteration are both employedto deal with loanwords. They two have certain links with each other, and at the sametime differences still exist. Chapter Four is the translational theories accounting for zero translation. Thepaper argues that functional equivalence, principle of least efforts and tact maxim canserve as the theoretic basis for zero translation. Chapter Five mainly concerns the types and forms of zero translation. Chapter Six mainly concerns the criticism of and prospect for zero translation.Zero translation has both positive and negative roles. The application principles ofzero translation should be taken into consideration in order to employ its positive roleand to avoid its negative role.
