This thesis attempts to explore the role of incorporating strategy training in classroom English teaching. It aims at helping English language teachers to find a new breakthrough in their efforts to improve language teaching and learning efficiently. The research findings have shown that learning strategies and strategy training do facilitate students' learning. They enable students to develop proper learning attitude, enhance motivation, adjust learning strategies, and increase their confidence. Research shows that the effect of strategy training is influenced by various factors such as the learners' present language proficiency, the difficulty of the learning task, the complexity of certain strategy, and the teachers' knowledge of the learning strategies as well as the techniques used in strategy training.Although some Chinese researchers began the study in the field of language learning strategies in mid 1980s, it is still in its infancy compared with the study of learning strategies in the western countries. Many aspects in this field need further investigation. And the writer of this thesis only makes a tentative study of the role of learning strategies of Chinese EFL learners in classroom setting from a theoretical point of view. For the "student-centred and strategy-based" principle of classroom instruction she is going to do more researches to provide a practical and instructive teaching model with more detailed descriptions in the future. An important implication, we believe, is that EFL teachers should have a better understanding of the training of strategy use. The appropriate use of learning strategies not only promotes learners' language learning effectiveness, but also it can be transferred to the learning of other subjects, and learning in general so the learners can develop toward the attainment of the abilities of life-long learning. It is important to improve language learners' meta-cognition and train their strategy use in order to use learning strategy more appropriately and effectively. Thus, the learners become autonomous in their learning and are able to learn under various circumstances. After the introduction, the writer of this thesis tries to summarize the definition of learning strategies given by some influential western researchers, the characteristics of learning strategies and the different ways to classify learning strategies used by some influential Chinese and western researchers. Secondly, she briefly analyzes some factors influencing the establishment of learning strategies on the part of the learner. Thirdly, she elaborates the characteristics of Chinese EFL learners and explains the methods used to investigate learning strategies and the learning strategies used frequently by Chinese EFL learners. Finally, the writer of this thesis tries to probe learning strategy training in the classroom and the role of the teacher in learning strategy establishment. And she also analyzes the implications of learning strategy training on EFL teaching in China. Based on the research, she draws a conclusion that the instructions in English class should be student-centred and strategy-based in the future. The writer also put forward some useful suggestions on English teaching which can help the teacher to play a more important role in EFLteaching, provide more help for the students in their learning, develop a more efficient learning methods in the students and improve their initiatives in EFL learning. This paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter makes an exposition of the basic theory of learning strategies, including their definitions, classification .It is the theoretical basis of the thesis. The second chapter discusses some factors influencing the learning strategies establishment. Chapter Three is the most important part of the whole thesis. An empirical study on learning strategy use of non-English majors and analysis of Chinese EFL learner's learning strategies are conducted here. Chapter Four discusses the goals, steps of strategy training and approaches to strategy training. And...
