Study On Reception To Xie's Works In The Southern Dynasty

Xie-Lingyun was always the focus figure in the circle of poets in the Southern Dynasty. And his works were widely received by his times in various angles flexibly and profoundly. However, up to now, there is nearly no systematic researching monograph or thesis on this issue. This thesis attempted a full and systematic sorting on this issue in the view of reception aesthetics so as to present the true vicissitudes of Xie's position in his times in literature ,and further analyze the underlying reasons from the general mood ,aesthetic taste and the reception agents, thus to trace the general development of poetry in the Southern Dynasty.The thesis is composed of three parts:Part One is the general introduction concerning with the literature review on Xie's reception studies, the reception theory and the value of this study.Part Two is the main body of the thesis composed of four chapters and an added pseud-chapter.Chapter One, dividing Xie's life into two stages and six sub-periods, presents a brief account of Xie's life and his literature creation on the base of a general analysis of historical records on Xie and his works.Chapter Two is about the Jin and Song Dynasties as the foundation period of Xie's reception in the Southern Dynasty. This chapter mainly analyzed the reasons why Xie took the top position in the history of literature in the Jin and Song Dynasties with combination of the reception of Xie's from his times to illustrate that Xie's works, from content to form, represented the main direction of the poetry development during that Period.Chapter Three and Four are about the Qi and Liang Dynasties as the climax period of Xie's reception in the Southern Dynasty. As an important literature phenomenon, Xie's works aroused warm concerning and debating because of its complex and profound features. The evaluation and ranking to Xie has something very important to do with the whole development tendency of the poetry in the Southern Dynasty and the construction of poetry notions. In this sense, how to understand and receive Xie's works is undoubtedly the key of the poetry development in Qi and Liang Dynasties. Xie's reception became the main way from which thepoets in Qi and Liang Dynasties began the reform of the poetry style in its times.The added pseudo-chapter is about the Chen Dynasty as the declining period of Xie's reception in the Southern Dynasty. Having experienced the fierce debate in the Qi and Liang Dynasties, the general orientation of poetry development had been decided and the prevailing aesthetics custom had come into being. As the dean of poets in the Southern Dynasty, Xie faded out of the vision of the poets in the Chen Dynasty, thus after accomplished his historical mission in the literature history, Xie became a history figurePart Three is the conclusion. Firstly, the reception to Xie's from the Southern Dynasty with variety and fullness, it made the foundation of the reception to Xie's works in successive dynasties .Secondly, it aroused the important poetry discussion, for example, the notion "freshness and naturalness", which has the ever-lasting meaning and value to Chinese poetry and aesthetics. Last but not least, the reception to Xie's works during the Southern Dynasty manifested a process of declining of Xie's influence, which really reflected the influence on Xie's reception from the transition of poetry notions and the formulation the aesthetics paradigm. The process of the reception to Xie's works is one that the poets of the Southern Dynasty tried to seek the way of poetry in its times. It can never be too exaggerated for us to highly evaluate the great influence of Xie to the poetry development in the Southern Dynasty.
