A Study On The Southern Dynasties Dance Art

Dances of the Southern dynasties played important roles in Chinese traditional dances. Historically, dances during this period can trace back to the very beginning of southern area dances, which can be proved by a piece of dancing-grained potsherd unearthed in the ruins of Shixia, which is located in Qujiang County, Guandong Province.Geographically, this period saw great economic development of southern China due to that large scale of people migrated southward. Moreover, Confucianism’s unchallenged domination of Chinese culture and thought was greatly weakened, while Buddhism and Taoism were thriving. Along with ideological emancipation, various forms of dance were flourishing, which were characterized by hedonism and elegance, and laid a solid foundation for the dance art of Sui and Tang dynasties.
