Change 1949: Transition Of Urban Life-styles In Shanghai

The thesis analyses the transformation in the life style of Shanghai citizens before and after 1949 Revolution.The attention is focused on the changes that have taken place in the daily life of Shanghai citizens after the socialism revolution,thus analyzing the relations between the transformation in the life style on one hand and the change of social structure ,the evolution of thought on the other hand.A traditionally held view is ,the change in the relation between State and society and the reinforcement of totalitarianism social control methods result in the comprehensive transformation of life style of citizens. However, life style of citizens is not a simple social phenomenon, but a complex one that involves complicated and specific cultural factors. To analyse this phenomenon in a comprehensive way, we need to conduct a discussion on the transformation of life style not only from the objective social-economic perspective but from the perspective of citizen's subjective feeling so as to analyse the concrete functions and features of their life style. On the whole the analysis will be developed on the perspective of cultural sociology, which will help us to have a better understanding of the society and culture in the specific period.We imported the life style theory of Germany sociology to make relevant research.In our sociology research in people's living ,the most frequently used concept is life style. Although both the concept life style and living way are actually exploring the same theme, the two concepts have different theoretical intentions and paths of development. In traditional research of sociology, living way was often considered to be a affiliated concept of disparity in class, hierarchy and community. Whereas life style freed itself from being an affiliated concept,and transformed into a independent classification tool for social classification. After a couple of decades' evolution, life style research has shaped an article of theoretical system with atmosphere as its core concept ,and at the same time brought about large amounts of sociology researches.The research has found that before 1949 Revolution ,Shanghai has gradually formed a kind of municipal living atmosphere which is totally different from that of rural areas. And the macro atmosphere of life style included several secondary atmospheres .After 1949 Revolution ,with the introduction of liberation zone living atmosphere, the nation exterminated the foundation of original living atmosphere ,thus propelling the popularity of new values and ideology .which leaded to the appearance of publiclization of private life and employeealiztion of life style ,which maintained its influence on the current living atmosphere of Shanghai.In the process of transformation of life style ,the cultural significance is evident.The first chapter is preface. The second chapter of the thesis will discuss somefundamental theoretical questions including the evolution history of life style theory, the concept of living atmosphere ,the urbanism and so on ,which will provide the basic conceptual system and analytic framework for the whole study. The chapters followed are arranged in a chronological order ,the third chapter analyses the complicated relations among Shanghai's municipal living atmosphere , municipal living atmosphere and municipal society and culture. The fourth chapter makes a discussion about liberation zone living atmosphere ,with attention focused on the relations among liberation zone living atmosphere ,communist living atmosphere and rural living atmosphere. The fifth chapter goes into the analysis of how the nation transformed the municipal living atmosphere by ways of popularizing the liberation zone living atmosphere with the methods of social recreation and ideology mobilization. The sixth chapter continued the analysis of formation of Shanghai living atmosphere ,which is the very influence that have exerted on the current society and culture of Shanghai.
