It is an important event in the history of international cultural exchange that Christianity entered into China. This thesis focuses on Ming and Qing Dynasties because during that period of time, Christianity began to have substantial engagement with the culture and the social life of China. Regarding the opinion that tolerance and understanding are really necessary to the cultural exchange as the main rule, the thesis discusses how Christianity entered into the society of China. What the first chapter of the thesis talks about is how the western missionaries carried out their flexible tactics of missionary work to obtain the Chinese people's especially the Chinese Scholars' acceptation of Christianity. The second chapter firstly looks back the course that Christianity entered into the society of China and then got the opportunities to develop itself from the angle of the relationship between the power of the Chinese emperor and the Christian God. In the course of the development, the links among Christianity, the Chinese culture and social life became closer and closer. So the compromise that the missionaries made when they firstly arrived in China gradually changed into substantial socialization of Christianity which began to enter into and have its feet firmly planted at the social life of China. The last chapter puts its emphasis on Christianity and the Chinese culture and finally comes to a conclusion that the indigenization of Christianity is the historical trend. Besides the exposition in the first part of this chapter, the second part discusses the links between Christianity and Buddhism in China to make it clearer that Christianity should be an element of Chinese culture and be in harmony with other cultural elements in order to share the prosperous future.
