Modem Chinese Literature (1917-1949) is an important stage when the Chinese literature transformed from the classic to modem and gradually established its new cultural tradition. The formation and development of modem literature has a close relationship with the modem western culture and the ancient Chinese tradition."Three Communications " is a concept raised when we multi-directionally examine the development of the modem fiction creation from a cultural perspective. In concrete, it refers to the characteristics manifested in the process of cultural succession, communication, borrowing and integration in three aspects whilst connecting the ancient and modem times, communicating between the Chinese and western orientation, and blending the refined and popular styles. As a modem writer, every person must be confronted with the practical problems of cultural succession, borrowing and creativity in his or her literature activities. Consequently, the concept of "Three Communications" can also be used to describe the relationship between an author's creation and the multifaceted cultural reality arisen from the ancient and the modem versions, the Chinese and the western orientation and the refined and the popular styles. This thesis introduces the theory of "culturalism" on the cultural development, attempting to explore the author's features of clutural creation, mainly from the concrete theoretical framework such as the influence of the cultural value choice upon the cultural succession and creation and the promotion of the cultural communication to the cultural creativity, hi the modem literature, Zhang-Ailing was a famous woman author who made a profound achievement in fiction writing and her works had special value and significance in the history of modem literature. Connecting the ancient and modem times, Part two expounds that in the fictionwriting, Zhang-Ailing not only consciously succeeded the fine tradition of the classic Chinese tradition, but also borrowed the creative products of the new literature since the May 4 Movement. Since the May 4 movement there was a strong tendency against the tradition and many progressive youths were fighting for the revolution and trying hard to repudiating the tradition. In this kind of anti-traditional atmosphere, Zhang-Ailing obstinately stuck to the enthusiasm towards the tradition. When the new literature became the mainstream and many writers followed the trend, She absorbed the strengths of the new literature and went in the different direction. Therefore, the fictions by Zhang-Ailing displayed certain unique features. Part three explores the relationship between the fictions by Zhang-Ailing and the western literature from the point of considering the Chinese literature and the foreign culture. Deeply influenced by the western culture, she presented many features common to the cultural view of the western modernism but this didn't affect the distinct features of the national style in her fictions.
