Study On Zhang Ailing's Translation Of Her Fiction Jinsuo Ji

The Golden Cangue, translated by Zhang Ailing herself, is an excellent version of the Chinese edition Jinsuo Ji. Through examining the selected examples, the thesis makes a careful analysis of the English version and explores the ways employed by Zhang Ailing in translation, dealing with such aspects as lexis, syntax, rhetorical devices and cultural information. The author does not intend to exhaust all facets of each aspect. Instead, she concentrates on what seems to be interesting to her or probably challenging to the average readers.Translation is an activity of communicating cultures. English and Chinese belong to two entirely different language families and they are remote in their cultural aspects. Approaches to cultures involved in translation may be divided into two methods: SL culture-oriented and TL culture-oriented. So in the course of analysis, the issue of foreignization and domestication is commented on. The analysis leads to the conclusion that Zhang mainly adopted foreignization strategy in her process of translation and her translation strategy can be justified by Skopos theory and patronage theory.
