Space is an important expressive object of painting. Its context changes constantly along with the development of space-time concept. The spatial form in western contemporary painting is also beyond the exception .The western artists express their perception about objects in visual sense and voice their inner sensation through a variety of spatial forms. This is a prominent and crucial phenomenon in the progress of contemporary art. This thesis explores into the formal language of western contemporary painting, which is made up of four chapters. In the first chapter, this thesis describes the evolution of western space-time concept and its effects on painting, aiming at pointing out the source of western contemporary space-time concept. In the second chapter, this thesis discusses the multiple construction of spatial formal language of western contemporary painting, and the trend from such construction to uncertainty and miscellaneausness. In the third chapter, this thesis analyses the inner factors influencing the spatial representation of western contemporary painting from the perspectives of western social science, culture, epistemology, oriental art and elements in design, and the like, and demonstrates the complexity of such representation and the mutual dependence between western and oriental arts. In the fourth chapter, this thesis probes into the spiritual strain involved in artifacts that is produced by means of spatial outer form of western contemporary painting.
