| The purpose of this thesis is to explore Porter's artistic technique especially her method of forming a contrast between reserve and volubility so as to unveil human nature with the aim of seeking truth in the stories of Old Mortality, Holiday, Noon Wine and He. Silent narrators cannot be understood by readers directly through their "language", but through the narrative by others for readers to establish an understanding about them. In this way, inarticulate as they are, they can "speak out"their own personal reality to readers.
