As a rising star of Northern Ireland female writers,Anna Burns has been paid more and more attention by Chinese and foreign academic circles in recent two years.Milkman,Anna Burns’ third novel, was published in 2018.After publication,it has won the Booker Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Orwell Prize. The novel is the ordinary story of an 18-year-old girl. She loves reading and has no interest in politics, but she is forced to have a relationship with an elderly and married “milkman”,a leader of a paramilitary group. The story is set in the period of “Northern Ireland Conflict” in the1970 s.In recent years, the long-standing border issue of Northern Ireland has reappeared due to Brexit.Anna Burns’ personal experience and unique views in the violent turmoil caused by the Northern Ireland issue have attracted a large number of readers and attention for her novel Milkman.First of all, based on Jacques Rancière’s Silence Narration, the narrators’ identity silence can be highlighted through the ways of the anonymization of subjects and the contrast of behaviors.Secondly, the silence, the inner monologue, and the simple daily words in the novel obviously provide rhetorical devices for the construction of the text. The narration in a petrochemical way that appeared repeatedly in the novel express historical changes in another way.So that readers can feel the charm of the mute speech. Finally,in order to reveal the silence of ideology,Burns makes the partition of characters’ sensibility through foundation of the narration in a petrochemical way.In a word, through the analysis of the Silence Narration in Milkman,Burns’ literary thoughts can be clearly displayed. It provides a new perspective for the interpretation of Milkman. Finally,I hope this thesis can contribute to the application of Silence Narration in literary research. It is expected that the thesis make a contribution to Anna Burns’ Milkman and the application of Silence Narration in literary research.
