Under the main development trend of modern diversified design,we have found the fact that with new concepts on existence pattern ofhuman beings being introduced, the rules adopted in traditional planedesign have been gradually broken through on way of thinking andexpression of sentiment, the intrinsic symbols are decomposed, themankind tries best to find reasonable visual space during the coursestriding across the century, and development of modern art and designin China has generated new demand for design.Design in China burdens a heavy task and has a long way to go.The designers have been playing an active role in promoting lifequality and accelerating civilization progress, and they thereforeshoulder a significant mission to guide the modern art and design inChina onto a platform of healthy, positive and creative development.Then, where is the way for development of modern art and design inChina? This a top concern for modern art designers to care andanswer.After study of massive data and information, the author of thisthesis makes thorough analysis on present situation and futuredevelopment of the modern art and design in China, and believes thatto constitute platform for art and design of harmonious developmentwith material civilization and spiritual civilization is the correctdirection for development of modern art and design in China.This thesis is divided into three parts, which unfolds fromfundamental theory, and makes thorough analysis on harmoniousdevelopment of material civilization and spiritual civilization. To theauthor's opinion, the theory on harmonious development of materialcivilization and spiritual civilization should be radiated onto the artand design field, which should be used as a methodology to guide thedirection for development of art and design in the future. The art anddesign of one-sided development should not be recommended, and theart and design must also exert its guiding role under the prerequisite toserve the material life. To construct platform for art and design oftwo civilizations is the only way for future development of art anddesign in China. Part I. General introduction to art and design The Art and Design derives from an English term, and it is theChinese understanding on foreign Art and Design combining localnational conditions. Internationally, the art and design are ranking inparallel, which embodies the characteristics of two disciplines featuredby not only mutual relation but also difference from each other. As a cultural phenomenon, the evolution of art and design reflectsthe scientific and technological achievements of the times and certainsituations of social ideology, which is also closely related with thesocial sectors of politics, economy, culture and art. During humanproduction and creation activities, to be practical for use and beautifulon appearance will give material and spiritual connotations to things,and this is one of the basic characteristics of human design activities.With production development and social labor division, design isgetting separated from art, and both become two independent systemsdifferent from each other. However, in view of development trace ofeither design or art, it always produces influence with each other,permeates into each other, and interacts with each other. Art anddesign is the integration of modern life as the modern term of the Artand Design bringing influence on the human life of our times. Art and design is the integration of science, technology and art asthe product of commercial society, and the essential demand of humanbeings when social material and spirit are developed onto certain level.Its field of application is continuously expanded with the material andspiritual development. As an indispensable part for social spiritualcivilization construction, the art and design has already become anattachment to material life under the absolute lead of material guidance,which therefore, has lost its function of guidance to the materialsociety. The present situation of art and design development showsnecessity to construct the platform for art and design of twocivilizations. Part II. To construct platform for art and design of two civilizations In view of harmonious development of spiritual civilization andmaterial civilization, this thesis expounds the necessity for harmoniousdevelopment of spiritual civilization and material civilization, thedefinition of harmonious development of two civilizations, and how toachieve harmonious development of two civilizations, based on whichit introduces this theory into the art and design field. It shows that asa social essence, material civilization has some actions to restrain thedevelopment of the spiritual civilization, but it cannot fully control thespiritual civilization. The spiritual civilization has the reacting forceon the material civilization in the same way. Art and design, aproduct of material civilization developed to some level, cannotfunction as the only accessory to the material life, which must exert itspositive guiding role, and become a beautiful flower on the art anddesign platform of two civilizations representing the people, the nation,the times, and the greenism. Part III. Discussion on responsibility of the future art designers inChina and imagination on development of the future art and design inChina As the main planners and creators of the design course, thedesigners (art and design workers) will produce direct and indirectinfluence on issues occurred during the entire stages of design. Moreimportantly, the designer is a link between design and the people, whowill guide and change the life mode of the people, and be responsiblefor people to receive the design and service. Design influences thelife style of the people and changes of social culture. People havebeen progressively accustomed to use design to represent their ownsocial position and personal grade. Design is the propeller ofconsumerism, propels the old life style to be ended according to plan,and accelerate the speed of social change. As the subject of designcourse, the designer must shoulder the great mission to guide thedirection of the future design, and introduce the modern art and designin China onto a platform of healthy, positive and progressivedevelopment. Under the conditions when the material conditions have becomecontinuously mature, the art and design must be stepping onto a newstage of development. Such a stage is unpredictable, however, it willcertainly follow the objective law of social development, and fit for thedevelopment of social material civilization. Also it will play a keyrole in social life, serve the requirements for development of thematerial civilization to the maximum, and play the role of positiveguidance.
