Lao She is a writer of unique writing style in Chinese modern history of literature. If Tolstoy's novels are a mirror of Russian Revolution, then Lao She's novels may be considered as a vivid picture of Chinese modern resident society. The populace's consciousness that contained in his works is a key for us to better understand the value of his work, From his very first novel Lao Zhang'Philosophy, he has set a accordatura for his later novels—populace-based. To describe the common people's lives is the beginning as well as the end of his life of creation. Lao She's works provide a broad residential society for us. What he offers to the literature gallery are not a number of typical images or a group of renowned characters, but a brilliant residential kingdom. His works are always targeted on the common people that are familiar to him. Regardless of his long works or the short stories, he keeps describing the lower class urban people of all trades and occupations: the cart drivers, the policeman, the master boxer, the prostitute, the paper-hanger, the barber, the awning artisan, the entertainer, the small merchant, the office clerk, the junior bureaucrat, the teacher, the student, the PhD who is granted the diploma overseas and so on. When portraying them, the writer on the one hand demonstrates the Confucianism's wishes of healing the world, on the other hand characters the common people with a strong color of ethical concepts of the populace. It is just the deep-rooted good and evil judgment standard accepted by the populace that causes Lao She to portray and describe characters in the way which is frequently adopted in Chinese tradition storytelling. Lao She is essentially a "populace writer', which is not only reflected in his choice of themes and description of characters, but also reflected in his language and the literature form choice. His language comes from Peking's alley, the big courtyard, the teahouse and theater and in his works, which are full of the soybean milk taste, lower-class people's life, thoughts and feelings are displayed by their representative language that they use a lot in real life. However, what impresses us most is the Lao She-style humor, which is natural, unornamented, full off ready wit and wisdom, laugh-causing and thought-provoking and through which, the writer ponders the culture and explores the human nature.
