The latest College English Curriculum Requirements (For Trial Implementation)published in 2004 places great stress on fostering non-English majors' autonomy in language learning. On one hand, the English learning process varies from one individual to another; in addition, with such teaching concepts as "student-centered" becoming recognized at home and abroad, scholars in the field of foreign language teaching have begun to share the idea that autonomy is indispensable to foreign language learning; what's more, in the modern society, with the rapid development of the information technology, it becomes essential for us to receive life-long education, which requires the higher education to involve it as an objective to foster the learning autonomy of college students. And it is also the case with the college English teaching. On the other hand, owing to the improvement of our teaching concepts and learning environment, so long as teachers take effective measures, students' learning autonomy can be gradually fostered.Based on the investigation, it is concluded that at present the non-English majors are not so autonomous as they are supposed to be.
