This dissertation studies the process of Genoese rise and decline from the 11th century to the 17th century. Genoese history of this time was divided into three phases. The first phase is from the beginning of the 11th century to the later phase of the 14th century; the second phase is from the later phase of the 14th century to the first phase of the 16th century; the third phase is from the first phase of the 16th century to the first phase of the 17th century. Besides the foreword and concluding remarks, this dissertation consists of three parts.Part One firstly briefly introduces Genoese geography, surroundings and the background of its rise, then the process of Genoese development, at last put enough emphasis on analyzing the reasons for Genoese rise from weak one, in terms of its big background and ways it applied. The analysis points out that Genoese ideal external surrounding and lasting war made it powerful. During this period, the trait of Genoese history can be described as: war and expansion.Part Two firstly briefly introduces the process of Genoese decline, then analyzes the reasons for Genoese decline from its prosperity, in terms of its changing internal and international situations. The conclusion is made that Genoese decline during the period due to the frequent political struggles, many natural disasters and the failure of competence with its opponents.
