Tuanluan was both an important Buddhist in the history of Chinese Buddhism and a man of contentious . In his life , he changed his belief several times and finally chose to propagate Buddhism as his lifelong career . However , in traditional Chinese founders of a sect of Buddhism , he remained obscure all his life . His contribution to pure land of Buddhism and his obscurity in ages formed a sharp contrast.Since modern times , many scholors held different opinions and understanding to the fact. In this article , the author gives us a further analysis and exploration to this issue from a historical point of view .This article is based on the historical science of Marxism and on the combination of Buddhism philosophy and historical science . It makes every effort to expound and prove the objective facts by quoting faithful historical materials . The author strives to study and apply a historical research level on the foundation of individual research of historical figures . Furthermore , a relatively objective evaluation is presented in this article .The paper is divided into seven parts.The prelude generalizes the academic value of this article , the present research situation , the writing motivation as well as some deficiencies in writing . Chapter One gives us a general account of Tan luan's life and historical background . Chapter Two analyzes Tan luan's pure land thoughts and religious practices . Such as the introduction of Buddhism into China , the academic origins of Tan luan's prue land thoughts , and the two important points of view in Tan luan's thoughts . Chapter Three focuses on Tanluan's attitudes toward the public people who have different levels of belief in Buddhism , including the Five Offences and the Ten Evils. Chapter Tour summarizes Tan luan's contribution to Buddhism . It includes four sections : changing the traditional practices way of Buddhism ; opening up the way of other forces for help;adapting to traditional Chinese thinking ; transforming noble's Buddhism into populace . Chapter Five analyzes from three points of view the possible reasons why Tanluan is not listed into the prue land founders of a sect of Buddhism . First, it reviews the process of arrangement ,then if explains the possibilities that Tanluan is exclusive of the prue land founders of a sect of Buddhism , which is based on the factionalism of Buddhism , the district of North and South , the dispute of Buddhism and Taoism . The conclusion affirms Tanluan's great contribution to Buddhism and argues that the key reason for Tanluan's not being listed into the founders of a sect of Buddhism is the influence of dispute of Buddhism and Taoism .
