When we analyse a sentence, we often use the conception: subject. In Chinese subject is a very important definition, too. But in fact, subject was borrowed from the indo-European grammar, it can' t be applied to Chinese absolutely. However, there hasn' t been a definition of subject that tally with Chinese characteristic in our conventional syntax. We use the definition from indo-European grammar without reconstructing scientifically. Wherefore, we have studied subject for a long time, but we haven' t solved the problem that exist all the while. So far no linguist has a immobile and accordant opinion about subject, and there isn' t a convictive definition of subject, too. That' s why we choose subject as the researchful object. The aim of this dissertation is to discuss the grammatical meaning of modern Chinese subject. In this paper we use the new theoretic production of topic and antitheses to open out the taxeme of modern Chinese subject. We think subject isn' t a indispensable component in a sentence. There is a conditional relation between subject and predicate. Many sentence components that were considered as subject are topic actually, which has turned into a sentence component. In the end, we generalize the process of syntax analyse, and verify the conclusion by analyzing the sentences in a essay.
