The war between China and Japan broken out in 1894, was an important turning point and a real starting point to the modern Chinese history, and has had great impact on our whole society. The newspapers that were praised as an effective weapon to spread culture by Liangqichao were an important means of the mass communication media at that time. And most of them recorded the whole process in the war and the change of the citizens' spirit actually and particularly, which provided extreme rich historic materials for our study in thiswar. An English merchant-Ernest Major set out to publish theShanghai Post in 1872, after that it had developed into an influential modern newspaper that had complete form and abundant contains, including news, editorials, supplements, advertisements and so on in the course of more than twenty years by this war. The thesis chose this war as the background, and selected the Shanghai Post as the writing foundation, which lived for the most years and had the greatest influence on the modern Chinese society. And the author analyzed the editorials that were most rational and most accurately represented the newspaper' s situation, in order to demonstrate the people' s opinions to this war at that time as far as possible. The author analyzed emphatically the form and contents of the newspaper base on the combingthe editorials meticulously during this war, and at last commented on the editorials with compassionate understanding and objective principle.
