This thesis applies the principle of salience in cognitive grammar to the translation of Chinese classical poetry. The author argues that the principle of salience influenced by cultural, linguistic, and personal factors can give a comprehensive analysis of the cognitive process in translating Chinese classical poetry. Though a difficult task, poetry translation is done by a lot of translators attracted by its artistic beauty. The noticeable features of Chinese classical poetry are the rich imagery and the appealing artistic conception, which is reflected in not only the particular linguistic phenomenon in the poetic text but also its internal cognitive mechanism. Through the cognitive analysis of the source texts and the target texts, we can penetrate into the thinking process of translators and understand the possibility to reproduce the original imagery and artistic conception in the translation of Chinese classical poetry.
