The thesis sets out to study the speaker's pragmatic intention in communication. Two typical subjects are chosen as the theme to be studied: studies on realizing devices of pragmatic intention and study on the relationship between intention and ambiguity. The paper mainly discusses the realizing devices of pragmatic intention. Firstly, People don't speak out what they really want to express, but in another indirect way. Thus, intention is generated when the literal meaning and the real purpose are not consistent. Secondly, most people consider that we should obey four maxims of Cooperation Principle. But, sometimes, when people violate certain maxims, some effects can be achieved—they can express their implied meaning. Thirdly, Sperber and Wilson put forward that the expression and the interpretation of meaning must be related closely. It is true, but not absolute. Incomplete relevance still can reveal intention, and get the effect of communication. And finally, discourse markers and coherence play very important role as well. Then, the paper discusses something about ambiguity. Intention and ambiguity cannot be separated. Ambiguity can be caused by conversational implicature and indirect speech act. It is unavoidable, but we can prevent it to take place only if when the speaker and the hearer make their utterance and purpose clear. We should discern the speaker's implied intention, and once the hearer cannot get the implied meaning or ambiguity arises, people should try to make it clear andrestore it in time.
