On The Culture Documental Features Of Hou Hsiao-hsien's Film

Hou Hsiao-hsien is a very successful example of Chinese film, who has a great influence not only in China but also in the world. With the root of realistic tradition in Chinese film, Hou Hsiao-hsien's film developed the Culture Documental trait of Visual Ethnography using the documentaries' mechanism. However, this culture documental trait differs from the documentaries in some aspects. Through chronicling folk culture and the life details, Hou Hsiao-hsien's film displayed the whole Taiwan society from time to space. He also created a special poetry realism by using long shot and empty shot in a creative way. By comparing Hou with the other Chinese directors, the thesis concludes that Hou Hsiao-hsien's culture documental should be a valuable approach for the development of Chinese film industry.
