The thesis carries out comparative study about the two heavyweight Taiwan director: Hsiao-hsien Hou and Edward Yang, with the main methods of comparative analysis. Also, It analyzes the significance of their movies to today's film industry, and impact on future generations of filmmakers.The full text including three parts with introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction clarifies the reasons of studying Hsiao-hsien Hou and Edward Yang, overviewing the studies of the status and problems in literary and art circles. The body is divided into four chapters, the first chapter cards the background, representative works, the reality and the historical significance of the movement of Taiwan's new film, which leads the life experience and creativities of the two directors; in the begining of the second chapter, it compares specific works of the two directors, which mainly includes the field of vision, theme, narrative, camera and the attitude of the spirit of Confucianism; the third chapter analyzes the creation of their respective pre and post-transformation, further to conduct a longitudinal comparison ; the fourth chapter talk about the meaning that the two directors bring to the younger generation. Finally, useing the words of the two directors which to wind up the discourse, commemorating the old history and welcoming a new time.
