Written by Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre is an impressive and touching literary work widely read with disputed viewpoints from readers and critics. Some have compliments on it, while others impose censures. In spite of that, there still remains room in its comprehensive connotations for readers to further probe into. This thesis is to analyze the image of the heroine from different dimensions, like the development of the heroine's character, her attitude towards love and her progress as a Christian, with the purpose of exploring the image and examine its enlightenments to the females today.Jane's distinct character is developed from her particular personal experiences. When still very young, Jane was passed into the care of her aunt's family, where she suffered great abuses and insults. Later she was packed off to a charity school, in which no charity existed. It wasn't until she fled the school to pursue her own independent Hfe that she began to realize what life should be like as a human being. These experiences cause her to be self-esteemed, self-reliant, and rebellious. She pursues equality between men and women. Her unique character, which is to influence all her life, makes her the "different sort" under the traditional conception and contemporary conventions.Jane's attitudes towards love. Poor and plain as Jane is, she pursues the highest level of love: the love and emotions based on mutual understanding, mutual respect and equality between males and females. This love is above both the primitive and material levels but emphasizes the noble spiritual quality. Love doesn't mean possession and in some cases giving up is ability as well as a kind of beauty.Jane's Way to a Christian. As a young girl, Jane is rebellious, which is the result of her miserable and bitter lif. In her life, "Eye for eye and tooth for tooth" is her principle. With the changes of her fortune, she gradually learns to exercise forbearance and tolerance and the spirit of Christianity. Eventually she becomes a genuine and standard Christian.Self-esteemed and self-reliant, Jane's noble character is the very practice thatought to be advocated in modern times. Nowadays, with varying values and the competitive situation, how females can have a foothold in society, seek for development and have their values realized is a realistic problem. Undoubtedly, the image of Jane Eyre arouses people's inspiration and contemplation.
