Mao Shi Xue is a famous work written by Ma Qi Chang after researching Mao Shi. This thesis discusses it comprehensively from five chapters. Chapter one summarizes Ma Qi Chang's experiences of life s achievement of literature and finds out the reason for his writing Mao Shi Xue. Ma Qi Chang wrote Mao Shi Xue for the purpose of serving the society. He wanted to make clear the ideas of Odes, recover or partly recover the political system norm of ancient sage and rebuild ideal society through the research of Mao Shi Xue; Chapter two introduces the stylistic rules and characteristics in Mao Shi Xue. The description of stylistic rules is summarized firstly in this Chapter. Then we mainly discuss its characteristics such as adherence to Mao Xu and Mao Zhuan, without prejudice of group and plentiful annotation of author's own view in order to stress its trait of Confucian classic. Chapter three discusses the Confucian classic in Mao Shi Xue: Ma preferred focus on the discovery of the meaning of Odes to the interpretation of words. When the meaning in Odes and Mao Zhuan contradicted to Mao Xu, Ma picked up the meaning of Mao Xu. Analysis of xing, he stressed on discovery the relationship between the xing and the purpose of Odes. Ma put his administration thought in his Mao Shi Xue . Chapter four discusses the value of Mao Shi Xue. Mao Shi Xue not only makes Mao Xu and Mao Zhuan's meaning clear, but also inherits the mode in Han dynasty, which serves the education function of Odes for politics. By absorbing predecessor's achievement, it fully restores Odes original writing purpose. Chapter five interprets the defaults of Mao Shi Xue which include wrongly thinking Guo Shi as the authors of Shi Xu, incorrectly explaining the themes and words of Odes. So we can give Mao Shi Xue an objective and imparting appraisal.
