Cultural Gap And Its Translation

Translation, as an indispensable medium for intercultural communication and exchange, plays an increasingly important role in spreading culture, promoting the mutual understanding of the people from different cultures, and accelerating cultural blending. Yet the cultural barriers stemming from heterogeneity of both language and culture may lead to unsuccessful intercultural communication and translation. And as the extreme embodiment of the heterogeneity, the cultural gap all the more puts translators in dilemma. In order to deal with the cultural gap problems and smooth the intercultural communication and translation, it is even more imperative and significant that they should be studied and handled effectively in the present age of globalization. First, this thesis discusses the intimate relationship of language, culture, cultural gap and translation. Second, it analyzes the origin of cultural gap, describes its types and cultural gap factors existing between English and Chinese, and sums up major problems they bring to intercultural translation. Finally, it tries to probe into these problems from a cultural perspective of domestication and foreignization and explores the proper methods to solve cultural gap problems in translation.Besides introduction and conclusion this thesis has three chapters.The introduction proposes great necessity and significance of tackling translation from a cultural approach with the fact that there has been a shift from a linguistic turn to a cultural turn in the translation studies and points out that cultural gap will inevitably bring inextricable problems during the process of intercultural communication and translation.Chapter One focuses on discussing the interwoven relationship of language, culture, cultural gap and translation.
