The writings of Shen Congwen in 1940s are especially unique. His nonfigurative pursuit toward his life during this period has intrigued many scholars who have made deep researches into it with their own thinking and emotional experience. In order to understand Shen Congwen's intentions of his writings as much as possible, I'm writing this article to seek for a brand new explanation. As it is known that the production of writings is closely related to the particular context of history. 1940s saw the production of Shen Congwen's important writings during his stay in Kunming. This article therefore will be focused on the intentions of Shen Congwen's choices of his writings during this period .This article is divided into 5 chapters which are arranged by different period. We will study into the changes of Shen Congwen's psychology in creating his writings. Chapter One introduces how Shen Congwen got famous and how the blow of failure brought his reconsideration to his life ; Chapter Two studies the reason for the gradual depletion of rural focused writings such as " western Hunan "and " long river " which giving an indication to Shen Congwen's conversion to internal thinking ;Chapter Three makes a comparison of literal environment of Chongqing, Yanan, Kunming showing the possibility of Shen Congwen's text experiment; Chapter Four makes an intensive study to his " reading the rainbow and recording " and the unachievable life ideal placed in such experimental novels. In Chapter Five I intend to analyze Shen Congwen's internal tensions which were reflected in his latest writings and his personal meanings per his life. This point in the article is that during his stay in Kunming,Shen Congwen was always located in a aspired margin between him ,the mass, and the history. Lastly his uncompromised attitude toward the history has finally marked his lonely precedence of his own.
