A Study On Domino Theory And Its Practice

The Vietnam War, one of important wars after the Second World War, has ended for more than 30 years. Very few wars have had its lasting time, scale and influence. The Vietnam War happened in two stages: the anti-France War (1946.12—1954.7) and the anti-America War (1954.9 — 1973.1).In this paper only anti-America War is discussed. The Domino Theory, which Eisenhower put forward in April 1954, is the guidance theory in the Vietnam War that four American governments carried out later. The major content of the theory is that if three Indochina countries (comprising Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) were occupied and dominated by Communist, so would other nations in Southeast Asia, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, even the Middle-East, Europe and Africa that described as " Free World ". This theory is the major content of the policy of the United States to Vietnam and the guidance theory in the Vietnam War.The study of this theory is helpful in understanding the length of the Vietnam War, in understanding America's "Containment" and hegemony policy, and the deadlock in Sino-U.S. relationship.In view of the Domino Theory's guidance role in the war, this paper attempts to give an overall introduction of it, emphasizing on its produce and practice, and commenting on these foundations.The paper is divided into 4 parts: foreword, text, conclusion and reference.The foreword gives an introduction of the research condition of the theory at home and abroad, also of the problem expected to be studied and adopted methods in this paper.The text is divided into 3 chapters.
