Focused on the fifty-year development of Erhu music since the new China was established in 1949, the thesis intends to make a brief introduction to its development, illustrate the characteristics in each stage, probe into its primitive types and artistic features, and therefore lead to the pondering and prospect over its progress. This subject serves as an essential part of discipline establishment of Erhu, and plays a positive role in the further development of Erhu music, and the overall understanding of folk instruments.The thesis as a whole falls into three chapters nine sections. The research approaches employed are Investigation, Documentation, Comparison, and Analysis etc. Based on the research of the predecessors, the essay tries to illustrate Erhu music for the following three aspects after referring to relevant material and theory.Chapter One: A Preliminary Study on Erhu Music after the Establishment of New China. Discussed in 3 stages in time sequence, and assisted with typical works, this chapter tries to analyze the characteristics and tendency of Erhu music in each period.Chapter Two: Major Types of Erhu Music and Its Artistic Features after the Establishment of New China. Erhu Music here is divided into traditional music, transplanted or edited music, created music, etude and mode scale, whose artistic features are specified respectively. And the last part of this chapter goes to the analysis of the constitution of the composers and their creation styles.Chapter Three: Pondering upon Erhu Music. By retrospect, the author tries to shallow his point of view on the experience and shortage of Erhu music's development and pose a forward looking on its future.
