Modernist fiction has achieved a lot with many schools, multi-values, different points of view, and fiction styles. Modernist fiction, different from the principle, art style and aesthetic beliefs of traditional fiction, explores and creates the techniques of form, shows a vague, indefinite kind of beauty, enriches and extends the ways of expression, artistic techniques, and aesthetic connotation, and promotes the development of fiction. This thesis discusses it as follows:1. This thesis investigates the background of modern fiction, the characteristics of its thinking, and its artistic characteristics. The rapid changes of social reality and the wide spreading of the philosophical thought such as irrationality, existentialism and modern psychology influence the aesthetic points of view of modern artists about objective world. The world doesn't possess a definite meaning itself, while fiction does so. The characteristics of the thinking of modern fiction reflect two themes: alienation and criticizing. Its artistic characteristics show the beauty of vagueness by means of indefiniteness and vagueness reflected in temporal-spatial, characters, plots, language of the works.2. The nature of beauty of vagueness---indefiniteness. First of all, the thesis defines vagueness as indefiniteness of genre, state of things; vagueness reflects itself in mobility. Then, the nature of beauty of vagueness lies in indefiniteness. Beauty is a unity of being distinct and being indistinct, a unity of being definite and being indefinite. Indistinctness and indefiniteness lead to beauty of vagueness. Finally, the thesis points out that based on real life, the Romantic literary of 19^th century and Realistic literary insist that fiction should re-show real life and its meaning is distinct and definite. Modernist fiction of 20^th century reflects many indefinite factors intervened, showing a indefinite, vague kind of beauty.3. The generation of beauty of vagueness of Modernist fiction --- vagueness reflected in temporal-spatial, characters, plot, language, ect. leads to beauty of vagueness of fiction. The fiction greatly uses such expressive means as "free association", "the disorder of temporal- spatial", "inner monologue", "stream of consciousness" and symbolism. It makes the characters' personalization abstract, denotative; it consciously breaks down the chains of plot and cause-effect, desalizes the plot so as to lose some plot through breaking, flash, dismemberment,ect Mountains of signifiers lead to polysemy and ambiguity of language;indefiniteness and vagueness reflected in temporal-spatial, characters, plot,language in the works show a infinite, vague kind of beauty.
