He Qifang as the famous poet and essayist is especially beloved by young readers relying on his HuaMengLu. This paper, through the study of the image of HuaMengLu, makes an attempt to explore the mental state of men of letters of 1930s. These scholars deeply felt melancholy and depression of their times, lingered between ambition and illusion; they were dying to find the direction of fights and struggles, but they lacked the forces of making progresses. As a result, literature became their own spiritual haven and Arcadia of feelings. These lonely men of letters only made silent sighs in their studies and mumbled at the fireside. The author of HuaMengLu adopts symbolic imagery, unique language and "poetry use" approach to prose and makes this book possess the characteristics of poetry, which shows the author's profound attainments of classical literature and the absorption and transmission of traditional culture. The dim artistic conception in the book presents the desperation and confusion of He Qifang in reality and conveys his complex of loneliness. In addition, the paper through the text study of painting dream combs out the course of trajectory and evolution of versions of HuaMengLu and tempts to figure out the circumstances of the author, the work and even the whole literary circles so as to make a contribution to literary history.
