As a member of "school of Yangzhou", Liu Shipei was a academic master who was called "double Shu"(Zhang Meishu and Liu Shenshu) with Zhang Taiyan. He had attracting performances on academic sphere and political platform in the latter Qing Dynasty and early years of the Republic of China, but his " changeable " made people pay more close attention to him.Qian Xuantong , Cai Yuanpei and Feng Ziyou, Zou Lu who both were senior statesman of the Chinese National Party thought him complicated and changeable while mentioned Liu Shipei. In the introductions of "Liu Shipei's selected works before the 1911 Revolution", Zhu Weizheng thought Liu was a "changeable " man.It was really like this, as a scholar and political personage, Liu Shipei had some common psychologies of the intellectual in that period of social transition. His thought and behavior were complicated and changeable in his transient life. He became a fighter who object to Qing Dynasty from a imperial examinations' enthusiast;He advocated the anarchism as member of the United League of China, then joined Duan Fang's group who was a high-ranking official of imperial court Then joined "Chou An"group to advocate autocratic monarchy in 1915;On academy stage, he was not only a master of study of Confucian classics ,but also a advocator of western studies, he ran a monthly magazine to recommend country studies.So, Liu Shipei was a condemned target all the time on politics in the past. In Feng Ziyou and Zou Lu's books, Liu Shipei was regarded as a reverse side model. After 1949, the first edited historical textbook and some relevant works also insisted on such a position. As a Confucian classics master who ran "Guo Gu" monthly magazine in the time of New Culture Movement, Liu Shipei was considered confronting with new culture and criticized by Lu Xun, et al.. That is to say Liu Shipei was not only criticized in political area, but also repelled or neglected in cultural area. To such a personages, it is very difficult to cause people's research interest, there are some misgivings when the academia study it. It is easy to understand to this phenomenon.Qian Mu suggested that we should entertain a kind of sympathy to ancient peoplewhen we study history. As to the intellectual in the period of dynasty change, what we should sympathize is not merely the painful and difficult choice, even more we should sympathize with the predicament that intellectuals are destined to wander in the value system that they lived on through the ages. For this reason, it is necessary to regard Liu Shipei as a member of intellectuals in the social transformation period and put him into the whole social background. We should combine his thought and behavior with his life closely, then investigate the intellectual's fighting, shouting, worrying and hazy at that time.This article regard Liu Shipei as a single case to study, and want to probe into the derp culture background of his changeable back, social trend and personal psychology change and the intricate interpersonal relationships at that time from his several important choose and the change course of his thought through? >'. his transient life, then find out the intellectual's group consciousness, political conscientious and the value orientation in life at that time. In other words, why does Liu Shipei so changeable? Is it unavoidable that intellectual's personality conflict and psychology contradiction in the social transformation period? Is it a kind of political culture — a psychological phenomena? Is it the destined content in the sphere of individual personality's formation, change and even distillation?...
