Yu Hua is a writer who has taken part in the course of contemporary Chineseliterature with his outstanding talent and many years of writing experience. He cameto the literary world as a pioneer with his cynical style of writing in the middle 1980s,but then he turned to portray reality and tradition in the early 1990s. As to Yu Hua'spioneer actions and his turn to realism, critics have done thorough and systemicresearch. The majority appreciate his spirit and courage to overthrow the traditionalculture and established order but very few people think whether the part he challengedto "topple down" is right or not. Seeing his writing manner turns to realismtraditionally, many people agreed while few people noticed his trace to follow the ideaof the drop-behind traditional culture. In fact, his whole literature works reflect hisattitude towards the traditional culture, which comes out in the form of overthrowingand following. "Overthrowing", means rebelling and dividing. It refers to his rebel anddenial towards some valuable things in the traditional culture. "Following", meansinheriting and following, which refers to his trace towards the drop-behind idea in thetradition. The first part:"overthrowing" . Yu Hua's deed of overthrowing can be annotated in two aspects: one on therecitative style of literature and the other on taste and ideology. By annotating thehighbrow character and pattern of marriage and family in his book, the redicalness ofoverthrowing can be well demonstrated. The whole character of the clerisy is negative. Overall, there are two kinds:people with incomplete character as well as people with despicable personality. Thissort of writing reflects the author's prejudice to such a colony. Author's intendeddistortion depreciation is obviously spotted through his illogical setting, ridiculoustone and cartoonlized exaggeration. Within this is the impact of social factor, individual background as well as his experience and education. The relationship of marriage in Yu Hua's writing presents a state lacking modernmarriage emotion and at the same time missing tradional marriage loyalty. And familya desparate situation filled with responsibility ascape and ethical beravement. In virtueof these,YuHua expressed his revolt to traditional order and political right, whichshowed his courage to challenge the set rules. However, his attitude also conveyed themisplay and unwit of his overthrowing behaviour. The second part:"Following"By analysing his communication of the tribulation and his female imagemolding,we can come to know his antomatic following of traditional androcentrimand fatalism.YuHua put the female image into two antitype: mother and prostitute, andendowed them with the character, that is hypo taxis and articlize. However, theessence is unitive, that is to say, they are both the carriers made on the demand oftraditional androcentrim's own privilege and appetite. The pieces of Yu Hua with "tribulation" as their theme, exhibit human's rigid lifeforce when facing miserable tribulation, however, at the meantime, it turns out tostrengthen the stability of fate as well as individual passivity. In the face of fate, depressingly, human beings have nothing to do but lie down to take the defeat, whichdelivers out a sense of foreordination. First, for most of his novels, the depiction hasunanimously fallen into a similar structure, say, metempsychosis. The figures cannotjump out their certain endings, and their predestined fates displace undetermined"coincidences" and "possibilities". Second, the author initiatively turns from hisformer opinion oppugning and disputing with the reality, to the promotion of tolerance, and on to releasing the tribulation. Also, the author's point of view can also find itsway in abandoning individual self-esteem and the existence value.Tag:Generally speaking, Yu Hua's overthrowing action aims at the valuable thingsthat we should follow in the tradition. But the things he follows are actually what weshould abandon these days. Overthrowing is a conscious action while following isprobably out of unconsciousness or sub consciousness. There are three reasons for thesituation. First on the list is that Yu Hua himself lacks deep research on the traditionalculture, which affects the comprehension and judgment of it. Besides, it has somethingto do with psychological system of growth and the education he receives. Then thereis a lack of real experience and deep observe in the western culture, which makes himdevoid of easy and rational mentation when he transplanted the western advanced ideato rebel and analyze the real world. All these center on one point, that is, writersshouldpay attention to cultivating their inner culture knowledge, wildly and deeply.
