Traditional Chinese culture is more than a massive wealth that the ancestors leftus, the traditional inertia and some shortage among the culture also became ourmodern historical burden. How to critically inherit the traditional culture has becomea major topic of modem persons with lofty ideals thinking. In the exploring of manymodern outstanding scholars, Li dazhao is undoubtedly one of the most creative. InMay Fourth Period, he was the first person to systematically propagate Marxism anduse the Marxist historical materialism to analyze traditional culture. His series ofinnovative ideas have paved the way to the modernization of Chinese culture andsocial development.As the change of the time, his understanding of Chinese traditional culture andattitude was changing in his lifetime. This paper will analyze Li dazhao’s thinkingdevelopment of Chinese traditional culture from three historical period in ModernChina. Due to the influence of Confucian culture in his youth, Li dazhao pondered aproblem from the view of the traditional philosophy and political philosophy andformed strong patriotic thoughts and simple moral and political theory. In NewCulture Movement, he accepted western radical democracy thought and Severelycriticized to the situation and society. Then he put forward his unique thought, namelythe thought of Min Yi, the thought of againsting Confucius, the thought of youngChina, The third civilization thought. After the October Revolution, Li dazhaoaccepted Marxism and analysised of traditional culture utilizing the Marxist historicalmaterialism. He criticized the bad quality of the traditional culture and the historicalroots of the formation in Politics, economy and culture,and proposed to transformfrom the physical and psychological aspects. He though that the developing directionof Chinese culture is the new ethics that absorbing advantage of Chinese andwest civilization and the new culture must be achieved and push through theproletarian struggle.This paper analyzes the developing course of Chinese traditional culture and theinternal logic of the ideological change of Li dazhao and reveals the historical statusof Chinese traditional culture in transition, reflecting the Marxism with Chinese culture combines historical inevitability.
