This dissertation is mainly to introduce an effective reading approach----Interactive ReadingApproach, and its application to the teaching in college English extensive reading for non-English majors. Based on the careful analysis of the nature of reading process and the comparison of the three approaches to reading (the bottom-up approach, the top-down approach and the interactive approach), it comes to a conclusion that the interactive approach reveals the essence of reading activities. So this dissertation aims at presenting the interactive approach to teach English reading in college. It suggests that during the reading process, the focus should be put both on decoding the text and on active guessing and predicting, activating the systemic and schematic knowledge of the reader, with the bottom-up and the top-down strategies functioning interactively in order to improve the learners reading ability and their ability to the use of English language.At the end of the dissertation, an experimental study of the application of interactive approach is presented, in order to assess its achievements in the respects of language competence and comprehension abilities through the comparison with the grammar-translation method.There are six parts in this study. The first part states the purpose and significance of the experiment. The second part is about literature review. The third part is the theoretical basis of this study, which illustrates the correlations between the interactive approach and English reading comprehension. The fourth part is a discussion of the teacher's roles and student's roles in reading class and how the teacher helps the students use this approach in English reading. The fifth part is the research to explore whether the experimental methodology has a significant effect on improving the student's reading competence and English language proficiency. The author draws the conclusion from the data analysis by performing with SPSS 12.0 in the last part.
