In order to test the possibility of using more contextualized vocabulary test items in College English Test (CET) this study investigates the effects of contextualization on CET vocabulary test items and the effects of combining vocabulary test into reading test. An experiment was conducted in which subjects were required to finish two types of vocabulary test items. The results show that contextualized vocabulary items (CVI) perform comparatively well in terms of correlation and discrimination. CVI, which simulates real communicating situation, is consistent with present communicative approach and its internal reliability is good enough for an achievement test. What's more, the subjects hold a positive attitude towards CVI.
