A Rose for Emily that is William Faulkner's most famous short story presents the change of Southern society after the American Civil War. He expressed his complicated feelings about his native land through this novel. Meanwhile, William Faulkner uses some typical modern writing techniques to represent such themes as slavery, patriarchy, racial discrimination and so on. The study of William Faulkner's long novels and his short story has mushroomed at home and abroad in recent years. These long novels include the Sound and the Fury, Light in August, As I lay Dying, and Absanon, Absanon!. But there are few scholars analyzing the difference between A Rose for Emily and William Faulkner's other novels. This thesis explores William Faulkner' Southern Complex in terms of themes and writing techniques of his short story A Rose for Emily. Comparing A Rose for Emily with William Faulkner's other novels, we can find that this novel is the epitome of almost all the themes and writing skills of William Faulkner's most novels. Meanwhile, this novel has its own specialty that other novels do not have. That is the transcendence of the Southern Complex.This paper consists of five parts. Part One presents an introduction to the paper by pointing out the purpose and the significance of this study. Part Two is literature review. In this part, the author makes a brief introduce to A Rose for Emily and introduces the relevant research on this novel. The author also gives the definition of the Southern Complex. Part There explains the inheritance of William Faulkner's Southern complex in terms of themes and writing techniques. Part Four explains the transcendence of William Faulkner's Southern complex in terms of themes and writing techniques. Finally, in the conclusion, the author summarizes the previous parts and emphasizes the significance of the argument of the thesis again.
