Writing evaluation is an extremely important part in teaching writing andresearch;it is also a difficult and challenging task. With the development ofcomputer science and internet technology, especially with the wide application oflanguage technology, a brand new evaluation system, e-evaluation system, wasintroduced into this field and has become a powerful assistant to the English writingteaching of the new time.Based on the "Experience English Writing Systems", the present study designedand developed an e-evaluation device (E-grading Device), in order to solve theproblem of how to evaluate the theme of an essay in the process of e-evaluation.The present paper is divided into seven chapters. It begins with the generalintroduction of the study's background and points out the importance and difficultyof evaluation. E-evaluation is introduced as a new concept of evaluation. Moreover, major research questions and organization of the present paper are also presented inthe beginning part. Then it makes a holistic review of the development ofe-evaluation systems home and abroad, and introduces working mechanisms of fourinternationally famous e-evaluation systems. After that, the paper reviews thetheories supporting the development of our e-evaluation system from amulti-theoretical perspective. Merits and problems of existing E-evaluation systemsare summarized in the following part, and the major research question is raised: howto evaluate an essay's theme through the delicacy of technology. Then, it designs anddevelops the software and its designing principles, framework and functionalintroduction are all presented in detail. The validity and reliability of the software aretested after that. And the whole study is ended with the conclusion and prospect. The present study shows that the "E-grading Device" is running well and isvalid and reliable to some extent. Writing evaluation involves various elements.Apart from the structure, the theme of an essay should also be evaluated correctly. This can only be achieved by setting up a holistic evaluation system. Based on thisrecognition, we think that in this holistic evaluation model, it is necessary to adopt aprocess of "alignment", i.e. the organic combination of e-evaluation and humanevaluation, in order to save time and energy as well as to evaluate precisely. Thisstudy also shows that there is a huge space left for further research and development.
