Hu Shi was an important personage in the history of the Chinese modern academic thought. He used the modern academic approach to study systematically the history of the Chinese philosophy. When studying the Chinese traditional philosophy, Hu Shi managed to excavate the aspects which had the modern significance. He combined Qian-Jia Learning of Simplicity and Pragmatism to formulate gradually his own scientific method whose guideline was "bold hypothesis, cautious verification". As the sources of the Chinese traditional culture, Confucianism and Taoism were the important parts of the modernization of the Chinese traditional culture which he was engaged in all his life long. He had made the brand-new elaboration to Confucianism and Taoism in comparison with the Western philosophy under the context of the era to realize the transformation of the scientific methodology. This article attempts to discuss how Hu Shi fused mutually the scientific methodology and the Chinese traditional culture under the dual backgrounds of Pragmatism and the deep traditional culture. These opened a new mentality for the research into the Chinese traditional culture and constructed the new model which impelled the modernization of the Chinese philosophy.
