The Explanation Of Calvino's Novels From Narratology

Since the 20th century, novels have received a prosperous development, besides that, the structuralism emerged in France vigorously in 1960s, and then the narrative theory becomes a famous doctrine gradually, it rapidly expands to the whole world, becoming one stream of international research current.Taking Booth, Genette, Mieke Bal, Rimmon-Kenan, Todorov and James Faylen's narrative theories as the theoretical foundation, this dissertation summarizes the basic meaning and the classification of the narrative angle, the narrative way and the relation-time and situation. After that the conclusion will be explored to be the research method to analyze narrative characteristics of Calvino's novels from these aspects so that we can conduct a comprehensive and profound research into narrative techniques of Calvino's novels.The thesis can be divided into three parts, the first part carries on the classification towards narrative angles, which are classified into "looking" and "seeing", namely the narration judgment and the narrator, and their connotations and the categories will receive elaborations, then we will analyze Calvino's novel from the narration angle and discover his novels are multi-angled, not fixed. During the narration, the narrator's identity and the viewpoint often changed. The second part take Booth's theory as the basis, the narrative way will be divided into the narration and the demonstration with discussion about their origin and connotation separately. In Calvino's novels, narrative ways are more than demonstrations which are demonstrated by some concrete examples referring to the large amount of exploitation of free indirect subscripts, oversteps authority states, metanarrations. All these mentioned have enriched the novel expression, shortening the distance between writers and readers.The third part takes the time-situation theory from Genette as the basis, it will analyze the relation type of story's and narration's time-situation . Calvino's novels mainly take the simultaneous time-situation relation as the main part interfaced with premise , supplement narrations and take-turn narrations.In conclusion, this thesis makes an effort to conduct a comprehensive study on Calvino's novels and provides a creative research method and technique.
