Frege(1848—1925) is ancestor of modern logic, and he is also recognized as the founder of analytical philosophy and philosophy of language. His thoughts have very important impetus to production and development of modern logic, contemporary analytical philosophy and the philosophy of language. In mid 19th century, the wide application of mathematics in different discipline, the requirement of overcoming its own limitation for traditional logic and the requirement that philosophy transforms itself because of its decline are external sources for Frege's thoughts in philosophy of language. Frege's profound grounding in mathematics, logic and the willingness to devote himself to logic are internal sources for his thoughts. In 1879, the publication of "Concept Writing" marks the foundation of propositional calculus and the predicate calculus —— the basic part of mathematical logic. In order to liberate philosophy from the occupied Psychologism at that time, Frege founded artificial formal language and regularized ordinary language. From this, Frege probed relation between understanding value of sentence and its truth, thinkingthat understanding value of sentence should contain understanding the sense of sentence and asking its reference—"Truth". And he concluded that the research object of logic is "Truth". In order to prove his opinions above, Frege puts forward principles in philosophy of language, they are the objective principle, the contextual principle and principle of distinction between concept and object. This paper researches the background of forming Frege's philosophy of language from mathematics, logic and philosophy. It analyses the main contents of his thoughts and their relations. It tries to give his thoughts right evaluation, offers practical significance, and enlightens us from regularity of logic development.
