The road was rugged since Christianity Protestantism had spread into China. Since middle of 19th century, the mission affairs and the missionary lives had suffered the attack because the continuous and increasing church cases. The Yihe Tuan Movement brought the unprecedented heavy losses to affairs of the Protestantism and the missionary also faced with the unprecedented disasters.In the 20th century, Protestantism had experienced the process from peak to declining to downfall. In first 20 years, Protestantism had obtained the unprecedented chance of development, because the social environment had turned better. In this period, the number of the mission groups and the population of missionary increased suddenly, the quantity of the China Protestant increased sharply. Protestantism achieved "the golden time" and peak in the church history. In the following ten years, the society aimed at churches and missionaries once more because of the influence of the nationalism and the patriotism. Protestantism suffered the attack once more and entered into a slow development time. In the against the Japanese Invasion time, the churches occupied by the Japanese forces in the enemy-occupied area, large quantities of missionaries return to homeland or were captured and the sources of income were also frozen. So the mission business fell into the trough. In the following civil war, with the Kuomintang's retreat in defeat again and again the western missionaries also prepared for retreat. And finally the Protestantism evacuated from the mainland in the initial period of new China.
