A Study Of Translator's Subjectivity From The Perspective Of Philosophical Hermeneutics

There have been various theoretical approaches to translator's subjectivity in translation studies. This thesis attempts to illustrate translator's subjectivity from the perspective of philosophical hermeneutics. Philosophical hermeneutics reveals the nature of text interpretation and the general principles of the understanding itself. Hermeneutically,translation is a difficult and complicated task of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural text understanding. A translator's unique characteristics caused by his historical background have a very important influence on his decisions in the process of translation. Translator is involved in an open circular dialogue with text all the time, during which he fuses his own horizon with that of the text and enters its world with his prejudices and finally accomplishes translation task. The text always generates new meaning when it faces different translators with different hermeneutical conditions and its meaning can never be exhausted in terms of history.Based on the analysis of the necessity and rationality of translator's subjectivity in the process of understanding a source text, this thesis further illustrates the causes of translator's subjectivity and its representations in the process of a target text creation.
