Rural settlement geography is one of the research contents of rural geography. As the country construction speeds up and the rural tourism develops continuously after the reformation and opening, many traditional rural settlements are broken; the natural environment is severely polluted, too. So the scholars once puttedforward the slogan--salvaging hometown construct . This paper works at themid-south areas of Shanxi province, which has more self-contained rural settlement data. Passing concrete analyze the country population amount in republic period, carry on country settlement grade demarcation. And then analyze different scale country settlement to distribute a characteristic on this foundation, so we have initial understanding to the country settlement scale in the mid-south areas of Shanxi. Next elaborate the total characteristic of the structure form to different scale rural settlement, and carry on a typical individual case analysis. At last, go deep into the relation between scale, structure form and natural environment, producing environment, social culture environment. The article thinks the rural settlement is mostly middle and small village in scale of the mid-south areas of Shanxi in republic period. The smaller the scale, the simpler the pattern; contrarily it is more complicated. Although scale and pattern of country settlement are very greatly influenced by natural and social cultural environment, they are finally decided by volume of production and rate of production of land and land that the settlement owns, namely the size of the economic power of settlement.This text is totally divided into four parts, as follows:Firstly, in this part the reason for the topic, the significance for the study, the current research situations, the research way of thinking, the contents and study method were given.
