Study On The Adverb In Guo Yu

The adverb is a relatively complex word class and studies on which is quite insufficient. And ancient books and records before Qing Dynasty constitute a very important part of studies of the ancient Chinese language. For that reason, the author selected adverbs in Guo Yu as research samples. During this study, the author investigated the adverb in Guo Yu from the semantic and pragmatic aspects by methods of ended statistics, comparison and conclusion with the purpose to discover the general picture of Chinese adverbs in the Spring and Autumn Period. This thesis consists of eight parts.Chapter One is an introduction, in which the purpose, method and edition of Guo Yu in this study are introduced.Chapter Two states the general picture of adverbs in Guo Yu, which includes the criteria of definition and ended statistics of these adverbs. In addition, these adverbs are classified into eight classes and their formations are analyzed.Chapter Three centers on the explanation of adverbs in Guo Yu, which explains respectively time adverbs, adverbs, modal adverbs, adverbs, negative adverbs, modest and honorific adverbs, conjunctive adverbs and mood adverbs.Chapter Four is concerning the semantic analysis of adverbs in Guo Yu. Here the general semantic picture of these adverbs is firstly summarized. Then they are classified into monosemantic and multisemantic groups according to their numbers of semantic items. Lastly the multisemantic adverbs are analyzed in terms of their meanings.
