Struggling Between Tradition And Reality

This dissertation, which makes a thorough exploration and analysis of intellectuals in Chili's works, can be divided into three parts: breeding of intellectual images, exhibition of intellectual images and the deep root of forming of intellectual images. Based on the social changes and the personal experiences of the author, Chi li made vivid and various descriptions of intellectual images, some of them were drifting between elite class and secular life, some became the losers in life, some were isolated with social life, and others fell to be the slaves of money and power. In a word, all of them declined to be embarrassing and grey kind of people during the fast social shift period. The author made a mock of the intellectuals in her narration, which on one hand reveals the great aesthetic change concerning intellectual image in Chinese literature, on the other hand, reflects the author's special thoughts in various fields of vision about the intellectual problem. Different from the elite point of view held by traditional writers, Chili standing on the position of petty civilian, put the intellectuals into commen people's life and treated them as nobody, which reveals the real existence of intellectuals during the period from the late of 80s to the beginning of 90s.
