Vocabulary is central to language and of critical importance to the language learners. Wilkinson once said, "Without grammar, very little ca be conveyed; without vocabulary, nothing an be conveyed. " McCarthy claimed that "No matter how well a student learns grammar, o matter how successfully he masters the sounds of a second language, without words to express a wide range of meanings, communication in that language cannot happen in any meaningful way. " Therefore, vocabulary acquisition is a key point that attracts great attention of educators, learners and surely the scholars in SLA research. But most Chinese College English students (non-English majors) are troubled by the inefficient approach in vocabulary acquisition: they have been wasting much time on memorizing vocabulary with little gain in the size; they have built up a large bank of receptive vocabulary with few to use properly in writing and speaking; they have kept a large amount of vocabulary knowledge in mind with poor capability. Exploring positive and effective approaches in English vocabulary acquisition is the right way bridge the gap between receptive vocabulary and productive one, to keep balance in the development of vocabulary knowledge and capability.
