This dissertation investigates the relation of thinking patterns to language transfer and the teaching of English writing to Chinese students. On the basis of the data collected from the students' abstracts of graduation essays, it mainly analyses how the thinking pattern influences Chinese students' writing in English and discusses what approaches should be taken to develop the students' writing competence in English language teaching.There is a widespread acceptance of the idea that the native language can greatly affect second language acquisition. Researchers have done a lot in exploring the role language transfer plays in discourse, semantics, syntax, phonology, and writing system, and the ways language transfer interacts with linguistic as well as cultural, social, and personal factors in second language learning and use. This dissertation, based on cognitive dimensions, investigates how the thinking pattern influences Chinese students' indirectness of writing in English.
