The stated purpose of the multiculturalism policy was to encourage members of all ethnic groups in Canada to maintain and share their language and cultural heritage with other Canadians. This was expected to build personal and collective confidence among members of all ethnic groups, and thus promote tolerance of diversity and positive inter-group attitudes. This paper considers multiculturalism as a successful policy to encourage ethnic integration in the multiethnic Montreal. Ethnic integration consists of two parts: the ethnic economic integration into the mainstream society and the majority's tolerance of cultural diversity. The integration of Chinese immigrants in Montreal typically represented the process of ethnic integration: from sub-community, to community, to mainstream society. This chapter starts from an overview of the Chinese in Montreal to immigration into the Chinese community, ethnic match with other ethnic groups and their economic performances in the metropolitan city. This is the general picture of Chinese immigrants integrate into the mainstream society of Montreal. There are some barriers for ethnic integration, such as racial discrimination, social exclusion for those new comers; the non-recognition of foreign credentials in the Canadian labor market, etc. The Canadian government has already been considering some multiculturalism-based policies to protect minority groups and immigrants, such as the social inclusion framework. This paper also points out the criticism of the current multiculturalism policy.
